If you read my previous article about the Real Mom’s Guide and Logistics Tips for the Icon of the Seas with Toddlers, you already know my number one golden rule when cruising with small children: never fly the same day the ship sets sail. Any flight delay or mishap with your luggage can literally leave you stranded.
For our trip on the Icon of the Seas from the Port of Miami, we decided not only to arrive with time to spare, but to build a mini vacation within the vacation: we booked 2 nights before embarkation to enjoy the city and ease into the pace, and 2 nights after disembarking to close out the trip without rushing or stress before flying back home.
Looking for a strategic, safe, walkable location and a chain hotel option, we chose the JW Marriott Miami in Brickell (located on Brickell Avenue). If you’re weighing pre- and post-cruise options for your family, or simply a family-friendly option in Brickell, here I’m sharing my complete experience, the good, the details to consider and my 100% honest verdict.

🚢 Location and Cruise Logistics: What We Liked Most
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after years of traveling with my daughters, it’s that logistics and practicality are EVERYTHING. When you’re traveling with a stroller, diaper bag and small children, the area where you stay completely defines your rest.
Brickell is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful, clean, modern and safe areas of Miami. Unlike staying in Miami Beach (where the vibe tends to be party-oriented or traffic crossing over to the port can get complicated), Brickell is an extremely walkable neighborhood with a very calm feel.
- ⏱️ Proximity to the Port of Miami: On the morning of embarkation, ordering an Uber or taxi from the hotel door to the Royal Caribbean cruise terminal took us only 15 to 20 minutes. The route is direct and hassle-free, which takes a huge amount of stress off your shoulders when you’re traveling with small children. When we disembarked, the return to the hotel was exactly as smooth.
- 🚶♀️ Everything on foot, no car needed: Being on Brickell Avenue lets you head out with the stroller and reach options like Brickell City Centre and Mary Brickell Village in less than 5 to 10 minutes on foot. Here you’ll find shops, restaurants with open terraces for an easy early dinner, and essentials like CVS or pharmacies just around the corner to grab anything last-minute (milk, snacks, wipes or water).
- 🛝 There are plenty of parks with playgrounds in the area that you can reach on foot with the stroller.

💡 Traveling mom tip: If you’re getting around the area, there are Metromover stations (Miami’s free elevated train) just steps from the hotel. Kids find it a fun attraction thanks to the views between the skyscrapers, and it’s super practical if you don’t want to walk too much in the heat.
🛏️ The Rooms: Family Space and Rest
We stayed in a room with a King-size bed and enough space for a sitting area. Overall, the room feels spacious, with elegant finishes and classic lines.
✨ Lucky mom anecdote: I don’t know why, but we got lucky and on our first stay they gave us an upgrade to a room on the Club Lounge Level, and we had access to a 24/7 lounge with food and drinks. With that, we grabbed bottles of water and yogurts for my daughter. Unfortunately, on our return stay we didn’t have it.
- 💤 Layout and comfort: The bed and sheets gave us a really good night’s rest.
- 🛁 The bathroom: Spacious, with a separate tub and shower, which for us is essential for the girls’ bath routine at night.
- 🔎 One detail to consider: Being very observant with hotels, you can tell it’s a property with history; although the rooms are well cared for, the room style and certain details feel a bit more classic/traditional compared to other JW Marriott properties I’ve stayed at that are more modern.
🍼 Traveling mom tip: If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, request the crib before you arrive through the Marriott app chat. At check-in, confirm they bring it to your room with extra sheets so it’s ready before nap time.
🏊♀️ Pool and Common Areas
One of the reasons I love leaving free days before and after a cruise is so I don’t overload the schedule. The pool has views of the Brickell buildings, and the kids love getting in.
For those looking to keep up a routine, the gym is extremely complete, spacious and well equipped. 🏋️♀️
🍽️ Dining Experience
The hotel has its main restaurant (Isabela’s) for breakfast service, plus a lounge and room service.
- 🥞 Breakfast: They have buffet and à la carte options with good choices. Being a luxury hotel, in a city like Miami, you may find the buffet breakfast prices can be high if you’re traveling as a family.
- ☕ The neighborhood advantage: Being right in Brickell, you’re not “trapped” eating inside the hotel every day. For the days after the cruise, we loved alternating between a relaxed breakfast at the hotel or walking a few steps for specialty coffee and lighter options. For dinners, having dozens of casual alternatives at Brickell City Centre solves your life without having to deal with complicated reservations.

⚖️ Pros and Cons: Here’s My Honest Conclusion
What we loved (The Pros):
- 🌟 Unbeatable location: Brickell is safe, walkable, clean and surrounded by family services (pharmacies, shops, restaurants).
- 🛝 There are different parks with playgrounds within walking distance for the kids.
- 🚗 Logistics to the port: Being only 15–20 minutes by car from the cruise terminals without dealing with the beach bottlenecks.
- 🛎️ Friendly service: The staff at reception and the bell desk were very attentive with the luggage and the stroller from the very first minute.
To consider (Con):
- 🏛️ Classic style: Although it’s a 5-star property, the design is more corporate and traditional; it feels “older” than other hotels in the brand.
- Note: My visit was in 2024; I understand the hotel has been renovated and now offers newer rooms.
