Every year we travel to Disneyland as a family (mom, dad and toddler). 👨👩👧 On past trips I’ve stayed at Disney’s Grand Californian, the Westin Anaheim and the JW Marriott. This time, however, the challenge was different: it was our first trip with my 6-month-old baby, so naps and proximity to the park became non-negotiable factors. 👶💤
Since I already knew the Grand Californian, which is the closest hotel to Disneyland, I wanted somewhere different that still offered the convenience of easy access. After researching the alternatives for our 4 nights and 4 park days, we chose the Disneyland Hotel, drawn in by the promise of its magical rooms, the pool and its location. 🏨✨
With rates that compete directly with the true luxury sector, the inevitable question is: Is it really worth it? 💳🤔
🗝️ Arrival and Check-in
As soon as we arrived, our reactions were positive; we were all excited to stay at this magical hotel. Compared to Disney’s Grand Californian, this one feels more “magical” or “more Disney” from the moment you arrive. ✨
We were greeted in the lobby and immediately given our keys to head up to our room in the Adventureland tower. My 4-year-old daughter loved the room key featuring Princess Aurora’s face. 👑 This hotel was going to be our home for the next 4 nights.
💡 Traveler tip: We arrived on a Sunday and left on a Thursday. We like going to the Disneyland parks on weekdays to avoid the crowds. Weekdays are definitely much less crowded. 🗓️
🛏️ The Room: Magical details, real space and the noise test
We had already seen photos of the room before going, but we were still incredibly excited when we walked in. The little magical details are everywhere: from the subtle carpet patterns to the iconic Mickey hands on the lamps. But ABOVE ALL, the headboard, which lights up with fireworks and plays music; we loved it! 🎆🎶
As for space, the room felt bigger than the one at the Grand Californian, and after doing some research I can confirm that it actually is bigger. The bathroom comes with a double vanity and a bathtub that turned out to be perfect for the girls’ baths. 🛁🫧
To fit us all, we requested a room with two Queen beds and a sofa bed. The layout worked really well for us: my husband slept in one bed, I slept in the other with the baby, and my 4-year-old daughter slept on the sofa bed. On top of that, the bed and sheets were VERY COMFORTABLE. 😴

⚠️ The downside: Downtown Disney noise 🔊
Our room faced Downtown Disney in the Adventureland Tower. On the day we arrived, exhausted from the trip, there was a live drum show right outside our window. The noise was unbearable. I was upset and thought about asking to change rooms, so we ended up having to sleep with white noise at full volume. 🥁🤦♀️
The following days there was honestly still some noise, not like the first day, but we were so tired from the parks that we fell asleep easily and the white noise helped drown it out. Even so, I think the soundproofing isn’t the best for a hotel at this level.
💡 Traveler tip: If noise bothers you or you’re traveling with small children, ask explicitly at check-in that your room doesn’t face Downtown Disney. 🤫
📦 Package service: A big win (and a money-saving tip)
Since we live in Guadalajara, Mexico, we did some online shopping for things we can’t get back home. At other luxury hotels in Anaheim, like the JW Marriott, we’d had to pay a fee (an extra charge) for receiving each package. To our surprise, at the Disneyland Hotel we didn’t have to pay that fee, which we really appreciated. They have a great system and finding our things was very easy. Here are two tips: 🛍️
- 💰 The best money-saving tip: Shop online at the official Disney store (DisneyStore.com) and send your packages directly to the hotel. In the park and hotel stores, the same products are priced much higher. Buying online in advance saves you quite a bit.
- 🚚 Delivery logistics: When you go to claim your packages, it’s super important to know which carrier each item was shipped with (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.). The hotel separates shipments by company: some are received directly in the Lobby and others outside, at the Delivery station. Knowing this will save you unnecessary trips.
🍽️ Dining options: (Plenty of choices, actually!)
The food offering is VERY WIDE, even more so if you count all the options in Downtown Disney, but here I’ll focus on the ones you’ll find inside the Disneyland Hotel. I’ll split it into two: sit-down options and Grab & Go options.
It’s worth mentioning that the prices at all these places reflect the extra cost of being inside Disney, so if you’re really looking for something budget-friendly, eating here isn’t the best option for your wallet. 💵
🥪 Grab & Go options (Quick and practical food)
If you’re traveling with small children, these options are lifesavers for breakfast before heading to the park or for a quick dinner in the room:
- 🌺 Tangaroa Terrace Tropical Bar & Grill: This is a Polynesian/Hawaiian-themed spot next to the pool. It has a Grab & Go section where in the mornings you can quickly grab coffee, fruit, yogurt or pastries. If you’d prefer something hot, they also have pineapple pancakes and rice bowls, and they’re served quickly to go.
- ☕ The Coffee House: Ideal if you’re just looking for a morning coffee and a quality pastry before starting the day. They also sell fruit and egg sandwiches, among other Starbucks-style options. It’s a small but efficient option.
🍴 Sit-Down Options and Lounges (Full-service restaurants)
For these options, I recommend booking well in advance through the Disney app, since they fill up and it’s hard to get a reservation at the last minute:
- 🧇 Goofy’s Kitchen (Character Dining): This is the hotel’s classic buffet. It’s a great option if you want your kids to see the characters (Goofy and his friends appear here) in a much more relaxed setting without the huge park lines. The food is good and very varied, perfect for going with children.
- 🍹 Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar / Broken Spell Lounge: These are options more geared toward adults. If you’re in the mood for a drink or a light dinner inside the hotel, these are fun alternatives, but for a family outing I wouldn’t recommend them.
📌 My recommendation: Alternating between the Grab & Go at Tangaroa Terrace for quick breakfasts and saving the sit-down restaurants for planned meals helps you optimize both your budget and the kids’ nap time. ⏰
🏊♀️ Family oasis: The pool area and an energy boost
Taking a mid-day break to leave the park and go to the pool is an energy boost, especially if you’re traveling with kids who are already tired of being in the parks. The Disneyland Hotel pool area is iconic and designed for the whole family to have an amazing time. In fact, it was one of the things my 4-year-old daughter was most excited about. 👧💦
- 🛝 The Monorail slides: The signature feature of these pools is their themed slides that mimic the classic Disney Monorail. My 4-year-old daughter went down the medium slide and LOVED IT; it was one of her favorite parts.
- 🏖️ Comfort and services: You don’t have to worry about bringing anything from your room. The hotel provides towels right there and there are plenty of lounge chairs available to relax while you watch the kids. Plus, servers are constantly coming around to the lounge chairs offering drinks and snacks.
📌 My recommendation: To avoid an overtired family, heading back to the hotel in the mid-afternoon, getting in the pool and letting the kids burn off their last burst of energy on the slides is the key to surviving Disney without meltdowns from exhaustion. 🌴

🚝 Location and Monorail: The reality of getting to the parks
Let’s talk about the location. Staying at the Disneyland Hotel means being just steps from Downtown Disney, which sounds idyllic on paper. However, after researching and planning how we’d get around using the famous Monorail, we ran into a reality that no travel blog had mentioned.
On foot, the walk from the hotel to the main park entrance takes between 15 and 20 minutes. It’s a flat, pleasant path, but let’s be honest: after a marathon day touring Disney, every step counts. That’s why the idea of using the Monorail (which has a station right there in Downtown Disney and drops you directly in the heart of Tomorrowland) sounded perfect… especially traveling with a baby and a small child. 🚶♀️👶
Unfortunately, the real logistics were far from the fantasy:
- ⏳ Long lines: Nobody warns you that the wait time to board can be considerable, especially in the mornings.
- ⚠️ Constant breakdowns: During the 4 days I visited the park, the service was intermittent.
- 🛑 Zero practicality: The time you spend standing in line, carrying a baby in the carrier and dealing with a 4-year-old’s exhaustion far exceeds the effort of walking 15 minutes.
- 🛒 On top of that, they make you fold your stroller before boarding the Monorail.
🔍 The real contrast: On one occasion, we lost up to 40 minutes between the line, the wait and the Monorail ride (there were breakdowns and only one of the two was running); by contrast, walking the route took us a maximum of 15 minutes.
If the Monorail ran without hiccups and without crowds, we’d be talking about a flawless 6-minute trip. But that wasn’t the day-to-day reality. In the end, the hotel’s location is still a big win because of its proximity to Downtown Disney, but if you’re going with the hope that the Monorail will be your transportation savior, it’s better to adjust your expectations.

⚖️ Verdict: Is it really worth what it costs?
The truth is that staying here is an experience in itself. The best part of spending these 4 nights and 5 days at the hotel was being fully immersed in the Disney world; by never leaving the property, the magic never breaks. The place is full of beautiful details, there are characters, and the theming surrounds you everywhere. ✨🏰
Weighing up our stay overall, here’s what we’re left with:
💖 What we loved (The Pros):
- 📍 The location: It’s excellent thanks to the immediate proximity to Downtown Disney (even considering the Monorail breakdowns).
- 🍕 The dining offering: It’s extensive, varied and very convenient (but expect park prices).
- 🏊 The pool area: It was a resounding plus and my 4-year-old daughter’s favorite.
💔 What fell short (The Cons):
- 🏷️ Luxury standard: Despite the luxury hotel price, don’t expect the amenities or ultra-premium service of a traditional luxury hotel.
- 🔊 Soundproofing: The noise in the rooms left a lot to be desired.
🎓 The big lesson: The real luxury you’re paying for here is total immersion and proximity. If your family is a big fan of the brand and it fits your budget, it’s an experience you really should have at least once in your life.
🎟️ Keep in mind that the exclusive benefits of staying with them have practically vanished. Forget the famous Early Entry to the parks; that no longer exists. Now, the only “benefit” they give you for your entire stay is a Lightning Lane pass for a single ride. With these big advantages removed, the real value of what you’re paying drops dramatically.
📝 My honest conclusion:
If I could turn back time, knowing everything I know today, I would stay again, because in the end the memory for the kids is magical and incredibly special. 💫
However, in my opinion, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I wouldn’t stay at this hotel again on a future trip. If my priority in the future were location and I had the budget, I’d rather go back to the Grand Californian or try the Pixar Place Hotel. On the other hand, if what I wanted were impeccable luxury and dining options outside the park, setting aside the “Disney atmosphere,” I’d go straight to the JW Marriott Anaheim. 🏨
